The Compulsive Traveler travels to Alaska, the last frontier, on the Seven Seas Navigator, a luxury ship that covers 2,200 miles from Vancouver to Seward.
Alaska is bear country and Tongass, a 17 million acre forest, is a great habitat for bears. We fly from Ketchican in a hydroplane to the remote location of Anan Creek and there we find bears galore.
At the Ketchikan Spruce mill the teams from Alaska and British Columbia are not busy cutting trees anymore but perform for tourists in a decathlon of axe throwing, bucksawing, log rolling and tree climbing and more….
At Skagway we take the Yukon train retracing the road of the gold prospectors train to White Pass Summit.
From Juneau we board an helicopter to Mendelhall Glacier one of 38 separate glaciers in the Juneau ice fields that stretch over 1500 square miles, walk on the ice and go dog-sledding on the snow. …
We arrive in Sitka, take a small boat on a search for wildlife and we get an escort of 20 maybe 30 orca whales doing a ballet right in front of our eyes.
We dock in Valdez. This is where in 1989 the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground spilling 11 mill gallons of crude oil in Williams Bay.
The images are so unsettling that one has to escape to Columbia Glacier and land on the ice. Alaska is magnificent, grand and unspoiled…. The question is: can we keep it that way?
