Oraton first appears in the public records of NewNetherlands in 1643, signing a peace treaty with the Dutch after the cold-blooded massacre of his tribesmen at Pavonia. He was highly regarded and activelysought to maintain peace and friendship with European settlers. His consentwas necessary before the Newark lands could be sold, but as his mark isnot on the deed, he is presumed to have died about 1667.
