EMM-311 Week 2 CLC – Anytown Risk and Vulnerability Assessment

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

The purpose of this assignment is to complete a risk and vulnerability assessment in preparation for developing a mitigation plan for the Anytown community.

Every community must prepare to deal with the consequences of unexpected disasters. Mitigation plans are an important line of defense for minimizing damage in the face of such emergencies. To develop an effective mitigation plan, community leaders must assess their town's risks and vulnerabilities and identify potential threats so that emergency managers can develop strategies aimed at keeping the populace safe. Such assessments must consider both natural and human-caused hazards.

For this assignment, your group will analyze Anytown, USA and complete a risk and vulnerability assessment. Refer to the "Anytown, USA" and "Anytown Mitigation Planning Map" resources for the Anytown community's demographics, layout, history, and other data that will help to complete the assessment.

Consider your group a part of Anytown's emergency planning team and complete a risk and vulnerability assessment (1,250-1,500 words) that addresses the following:

  1. Create a profile of the Anytown community. Include the size, population, identified structures, previous disasters the community has faced, and other relevant details to help characterize the whole community.
  2. Determine an appropriate planning team to help the community develop mitigation plans and implement mitigation strategies. Who are the specific civic and community stakeholders that should take part in developing a mitigation plan and responding to emergencies?
  3. Identify risks and describe the potential natural or human-caused hazards that pose a threat to the community.
  4. Identify and describe physical vulnerabilities apparent in the Anytown community. These vulnerabilities should include critical infrastructure, land, or structures that are particularly at risk from disasters.
  5. Identify social vulnerabilities within the community. These vulnerabilities should identify special-needs populations that may be particularly affected by a disaster.
