Anon : Downfall of Paris, The : Printable cover page
Composer: Anon (c.1815)
"The Essex Quick Step or the Fall of Paris. Arranged for the Harp or Piano Forte. Bath. Printed and sold by J & W Lintern, music sellers", c.1815. The Austen family possessed a very similar arrangement of this piece in a London edition.
Based upon the French revolutionary song Ça ira, "The fall of Paris" became popular from the mid 1790s and became ubiquitous amongst the allied military bands occupying Paris after the Battle of Waterloo. It is more often entitled "The Downfall of Paris".
Lintern's business traded for about 40 years from the mid-1780s, first at 3, Abbey Churchyard, and later in Orange Grove. Principally engaged in instrument hire, they also manufactured instruments and both published sheet music and maintained a commercial library.
