ENG 295 Wk 1 Discussion – POETRY & Canon

Wk 1 Discussion – Due Thursda

Post a total of 3 substantive responses 200 words min. each.  Answer all the questions below in your initial post and include at least one quote from the required readings and one quote from the textbook.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings:

Children’s poetry can stimulate a child’s imagination and have lasting influence on how a child views nature. Some of the earliest literature we learn as children is in the form of poetry.

In literature, the term canon refers to the most important works in a specific genre. They also refer to the works nearly everyone knows such as A visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Moore (1823, also called Twas the Night Before Christmas)

List two poems you believe should be included in the canon of children’s literature. Why did you make those choices?

What was your favorite childhood poem? Is it part of the canon of children’s poetry? What effect did this poem have on your imagination, views on nature or animals, or how you felt?

Does the way the poem is structured have any bearing on why it is your favorite from childhood? Why?

Ever heard of The Giving Tree, “A Boy Named Sue” or “The Unicorn Song?” These and soooo many more are by Shel Silverstein. Here is one of my favorite Children’s Poems by Shel Silverstein. Here is a link to the Shel Silverstein website. If you don’t know his poetry, please take a few minutes to read a couple of them here. How do these modern poems compare to the ones from this week’s readings?

ENG 295 Wk 2 Discussion – Illustrations

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words and use at least one example from the required readings – Post a total of 3 substantive responses.

Children’s literature is often enhanced by the use of illustrations. In fact, some children’s literature could be described as more image than narrative. The use of imagery in literature can highlight important concepts within the story.

Think about your favorite picture book. Is it part of the canon of children’s picture books?

How would your feelings about this book be different if there were no pictures? How do the images enhance the story and your understanding of it?

Who’s the boss?
