Although some individuals may experience both depressive and manic moods, at least one manic or mixed episode must occur in order to be diagnosed (Stahl, 2013). The National Comorbidity Survey Replication has estimated that the prevalence of Bipolar disorder in the past year has affected approximately 2.8% of U. S. adults (Bipolar Disorder, 2017).
