HST 155 Wk 1 Discussion – The Effects of European Settlements

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Week One begins with the introduction of European culture to the Americas starting in the 16th century. During this time of European settlement into the Americas, a variety of groups encountered indigenous Native Americans. Those coming into America included explorers in search of treasure, and settlers who created communities, began farming, spread religious doctrine, and established trade.

Consider these early interactions as you respond to the questions that follow.

Discussion questions:

What do you see as the primary effects European settlement had on the indigenous people of the Americas? Provide some examples. Next, consider the various groups of European settlers, including the wealthy, the poor, and the laborers, including indentured servants and black slaves. Discuss some of the differences that arose in the various colonies that were established. Share some examples to illustrate your points.

Due Monday

HST 155 Wk 2 Discussion – Enlightenment

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Week Two moves us forward to the turbulent times of the Revolutionary War in America. The 18th century began as a time of strengthening ties between the Colonies and the British Empire; however, this relationship soon deteriorated. The French and Indian Wars, which initiated the Stamp Act and other taxations, began a period of opposition and violent protest to British control. In 1776, after more than 10 years of struggle, American colonists were persuaded that separating from Great Britain was the only way forward.

The preamble to the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, has been hailed as an example of Enlightenment.

Discussion Questions:

How are the principles of Enlightenment reflected in the Declaration of Independence? Discuss the contrast between the equality and individual liberties promoted in the declaration and the reality of inequality in colonial America. Why does the Declaration continue to be an inspiration for international human rights today?

Due Monday

HST 155 Wk 3 Discussion – Political Parties

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

In the late 1700s, the fragile new government began to experience growing pains. Initially, there were no political parties, but as differences began to emerge about the formation of the centralized government and the proposed Constitution, the Federalist and Democratic-Republican parties formed.

Discussion questions: What were the major concerns of each political party? How did these opposing political views affect ratification of the Constitution and the addition of the Bill of Rights? Select one of the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Why do you think this amendment was included? How was it significant to the development of American democracy?

HST 155 Wk 4 Discussion – American Expansion

Post a total of 3 substantive responses over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial post and 2 replies to other students.

Due Thursday

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

The early 1800s saw the beginning of American expansion west of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase, orchestrated by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, doubled the previous territory of the newly formed United States. Jefferson proposed exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and funded an expedition team headed by Lewis and Clark to map the lands newly purchased from France and to find a Northwest Passage.

Discussion questions:

What do you see as the primary benefits of the Lewis and Clark expedition? Were Jefferson’s expectations for the expedition realized? One of the effects of American expansion to the west was additional displacement of Native Americans. Provide your thoughts about and some examples of the social and political ramifications of this movement?
