The poem is as follows.
Barney the Barn Owl was hatched from an egg
His feathers were fluffy and white
He slept like a log throughout most of the day
And stayed awake most of the night.
Barney the Barn Owl, he wasn't alone
He had a big brother called Ed
And their parents were constantly hunting for voles
In an effort to keep them both fed.
Barney the Barn Owl was small and petite
His brother was taller and plump
For Ed seemed to get all the voles he could eat
And he often gave Barney a thump.
Barney the Barn Owl complained to his Dad
“Why does Edward get most of the food?
I'm well behaved and he is quite bad”
And this started a brotherly feud.
One day Barney's parents were out quite a while
They could find neither mices nor vole
So Ed, being hungry, gave Barney a smile
And proceeded to swallow him whole.
The moral is clear; be they true, be they lies
You should never tell tales on each other
And if he looks peckish and he's double your size
It ain't wise to tell on your brother.
