ETH 120 Week 1 Individual Assignment Cultural Diversity Assignment Options

 

Instructions: Select and complete one of the following assignment options: Option A Imagine you are developing a training on diversity for your workplace. Your first task is to introduce yourself in terms of your own cultural diversity to demonstrate the variety and types of diversity present in our society. Write a 350- to 700-word blog post or essay describing yourself in terms of cultural diversity. To what ethnic, cultural, and other groups do you belong? Review the types of groups discussed in Ch.1 before beginning this assignment. Include a description of your understanding of the following, based on textbook and course materials:  

• The distinction between racial and ethnic groups
• The definition of prejudice and stereotypes
• At least one example of your personal experience with stereotyping. Was it a positive or negative stereotype? Explain. Format your essay or blog post according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines. Submit your assignment to the Assignment Files tab. If you write a blog post, submit a link to your blog.

 

Option B Write a 350- to 700-word summary of cultural diversity that includes responses to the following questions:   

• What is cultural diversity? Identify and briefly explain the dimensions of diversity. Use academic sources in responding to this question.
• Why is the study of cultural diversity important?
• With what ethnic, cultural, or other groups do you identify? Describe the members of your cultural group.    •  What is the importance of diversity training?   
• What is your experience with diversity? Is your workplace diverse? Could there be, or could there have been, more inclusion?
• What is the definition of stereotypes and prejudice? How are they related? Format your essay or blog post according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines. Submit your assignment to the Assignment Files tab. If you write a blog post, submit a link to your blog.

 

WEEK  2

 ETH 120Week 2 Individual Assignment Diversity Topics Assignment Options: Discrimination, Ethnicity, and Religion

Instructions: Select and complete one of the following assignment options: Option A Research one incident of a hate crime committed against a religious or ethnic group in your community or in the nation. It is suggested you begin by researching local or national news websites for recent incidents reported by the media. Write a 350- to 700-word paper describing the incident and that investigates the group further. Include responses to the following in your paper:  

• What occurred and what resulted from the hate crime?
• How does your selected group differ from other groups, such as in their beliefs, worship practices, values, ancestry, language, or culture?
• After careful consideration of your course materials, what do you think is the cause of this type of discrimination?
• How has your chosen group contributed to American culture?
• Has your perception of this group changed as a result of your research? Format your essay according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines. Submit your assignment to the Assignment Files tab.

WEEK  3

ETH 120Week 3 Individual Assignment Diversity Topics Assignment Options: Immigration and Racism

 

Instructions: Select and complete one of the following assignment options: Option A Research the immigration of one distinct cultural or ethnic group into the United States. Choose one of the groups discussed in Ch. 6-14. You must request permission from your instructor if you want to research another group not included in the text. Create an 8- to 12-slide presentation of your research that includes the following:   

• What is the history of the group's immigration into the United States? Is immigration from this group on the rise or declining?
• Historically, where has this group settled? Is this changing?
• What is one social issue related to the rights of your selected group? What obstacles have they encountered either in the past or present? Be specific. Research one incident that led to a court case. Include detailed speaker notes and images that support your content. Each slide should have three to four bullets of text which are a high-level overview of what is included in your speaker notes. You may write the speaker notes in the notes section of your selected presentation tool or in a separate Word document. Cite your sources according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines. Option B Create an 8- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with speaker notes (or another presentation format as approved by your instructor) that addresses the following:   

• What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity?
• Throughout most of U.S. history, in most locations, what race has been in the majority? What is the common ancestral background of most members of this group?
• What are some of the larger racial minorities in U.S. history? Identify the common ancestral backgrounds of each of these groups. When did each become a significant or notable minority group?
• Describe ways laws have been used to enforce discrimination? Provide examples. Which racial minorities were affected?
• Describe ways laws have been used to eliminate discrimination? Provide examples. Summarize the effects of these laws.
• How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations.
• Identify any existing social inequities based on race that remain today. Summarize the effects of remaining inequities on the group. Include detailed speaker notes and images that support your content. Each slide should have three to four bullets of text which are a high-level overview of what's included in your speaker notes.
