This presentation is for every math teacher whoever ever sat through a “Pro-D Event” and thought, “Ya, but I teach math.” This event is for you.
The goal of this workshop is to support teachers in developing engaged problem-solving communities in their classrooms. This is at the heart of BCs “NEW” math curriculum. The newness is not so much a change in content but an increased emphasis on the skills students need to develop while learning the content. To that end, how do we foster real problem-solving in our classes? What authentic opportunities are given for all students to explore, to analyze, to wonder about mathematics concepts/ideas? Are our classrooms set up to help students learn from their mistakes? How are students encouraged and supported to communicate with fellow students in offering ideas in classroom discourse?... What about international students? What about class composition?...
Participants will engage in activities/tasks/ conversations as though they were students so they can know what it will feel like for their students. Once it is experienced the participants will learn how to lead as teachers. While there is a clear outline of the day, the emphasis of what we learn will be guided by the real-time feedback of the participants.
