The action takes place at the beginning of the XVIII century. The main character, Francis Osbaldistone (English Francis Osbaldistone), quarrels with his father, the head of the trading house "Osbaldiston and Tresham", and he sends him to his uncle, to the north of England. Frank arrives at his uncle's castle (Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone). He meets with relatives and enjoys a distant relative of Uncle Diana Vernon (born Diana Vernon). The uncle himself is hiding from the authorities because of the sympathies shown towards the Jacobites. Frank's father leaves for Holland for urgent matters, and Osbaldiston and Tresham charges Cousin Rashleigh. However, Rashley steals a large sum of money and bills and hides. In pursuit of him, Frank goes to Glasgow.
Along the way, he intersects several times with a mysterious and powerful stranger who is called Rob Roy and who is somehow associated with Uncle Osbaldiston. He helps Frank recover the stolen bills. During the Jacobite rebellion, all sons of Osbaldiston perish. Frank becomes the sole heir to a large fortune. He marries Diana.
