Conan the Barbarian, John Carter, Tarzan, and Sherlock Holmes were some of the names that became famous during the era. Tales of manly men rescuing naked women and dominating hostile planets ruled.

And that is A Princess of Mars in a nutshell. John Carter is the courageous hero who rescues a naked princess (because everyone on the planet is naked) on a hostile Mars riddled with war and conflict.  He unites the cultures of Mars and launches it into a period of prosperity and peace, ruled by him of course, and his princess.
