When Tom Mindte first suggested the idea of recording, I was very excited. I had already been thinking about it, and I knew from the very start that I wanted it to be pretty much a traditional old time album. I had already done some recording at Patuxent Music as a part of Nate Leath's latest CD. Among Nate’s crew were Mark Schatz and Danny Knicely, so when I needed a guitarist and a bassist, I immediately thought of them. I was absolutely thrilled when they both said yes. The next people I recruited were Sarah Jarosz and Emma Beaton. Over the past summer, we had been singing a lot together, and I was very excited to have them in the studio with me. Then, of course, there was my brother Alex, an amazing musician.
I also immediately thought of Bruce Molsky. I thought that it would be so cool to have Bruce produce my very first album. I was overjoyed when he said he would do it. I probably wouldn't be playing old time music if it hadn't been for Bruce. I feel honored to have him be a part of this. So now I had some of my favorite musicians to help me. How much happier can you get??
Probably one of the most difficult parts was choosing the songs. I have never been good at answering the question, “What is your favorite song?” Now I was forced to pick only 15 to record. All of the tunes on this record I absolutely love. Well, that’s why I chose them, isn’t it? I hope you love them as much as I do!
