Auden to China in the late 1930s before going with him to America, which became his home for the rest of his life. He died on 4 January 1986. ‘The best prose writer in English’ Gore Vidal Celebrated as a masterpiece from its first publication, A Single Man is the story of George Falconer, an English professor in suburban California left heartbroken after the sudden death of his lover, Jim.
