Mr. Britling, in the past a happy and cheerful person, is now dying out. Outwardly calm and rational, good-natured to friends and guests, in his heart he experiences burning spiritual pain. After the death of his beloved wife, he practically lost the meaning of life, philosophically observing the society and the events taking place in the country and the world, he seeks answers to questions of concern to him in religion. His only spiritual joy is the son of Hugh. In order not to start the farm, the main character marries a second time. The current wife Edith does not cause him any emotional hardship, he is completely indifferent to the woman. His memory now and then dips him into memories of a brighter and happier life, eclipsing the real reality. The war begins. The only beloved son is called to join the ranks of the defenders of the homeland. His father's heart is torn apart from despair. He curses the whole white light for all the injustice, barbarity and chaos that reigns around. Together with Hugh, his friend Henry is sent to the service. Later, in his letter to Hugh's parents, he will state the fact of the death of a young guy.
