During the Franco-Prussian War, two English women meet in a French Field Hospital. When one, a traveler, is apparently killed in artillery attack the other, a nurse and former prostitute, assumes her identity and takes her place as the companion of a wealthy lady. Not so fast! A German surgeon brings the other back to life. Back to England she goes to assume her position. Poor wealthy lady! Who is whom? Who should she believe? At this point the story bounces back and forth for no apparent reason than to prolong the outcome. While I had high hopes when I started this novel, it soon became one of my least favorites. Nonetheless, there are parallels to the bible story and to identity theft of the current era.
