Two major factors in determining sample size for this research study will be the type of qualitative method chosen and the prevalence rate of children diagnosed with severe autism who are also enrolled in a special education program within public schools. According to the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence rate of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in 2012 is about 1.47% (Retrieved from https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.html). The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that about 0.76% of children diagnosed with ASD (or slightly more than half of all children with an ASD diagnosis) are receiving special educational services (Retrieved from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK332896/). Thus, the prevalence rate of children in a public school special education program that are diagnosed with severe autism would be at most 0.76%, in other words at most 7.6 students per 1000 students. This discourse highlights the potential difficulties in generating a large sample of participants or cases, regardless of the method chosen for this study.
The research method I asserted to use for this study in Module 6 DQ1 is an interpretive case study. Based upon the information that Walker (2016) provides, Grand Canyon University will require at least 10 participants or cases in the final sample of a case study. Further, Walker (2016) recommends targeting at least 20 participants or cases to actually obtain the required minimum sample. Hence, the researcher will most likely need to target a large geographical area to obtain the required sample.
