Information about Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BBD)
What causes it?
The cause of BDD is not clear, but it is thought to be genetic or caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
People with BDD are excessively worried about a part of their body which they perceive to have some sort of a defect. They will continue to hold this belief as reality despite reassurances about their appearance. This ‘false belief’ can be in relation to any area of the body may more often then not, the face is the most common.
A person with BDD may wear excessive make-up or heavy, loose clothing to hide their perceived body defect. They may repeatedly check in the mirrors and look for reassurance about their appearance from others. They may touch or measure the perceived defect to see if it has changed in some way or is still there. They may pluck their hair and eyebrows or pick at their skin. Often people with BDD feel anxious when around other people may not be able to hold down a job and often avoid socialising and they can also find it difficult to have relationships. Seeking medical treatments for the perceived defect is often a characteristic ot BDD and people with BDD will often diet and exercise to excess.
BDD is believed to affect at least 1% of the population in the UK. It is thought to be most common in people with a history of depression and/or social phobia. It often starts in early adolescence when people are most sensitive about their appearance and peer pressure is at its height.
Treatment for BDD may include hypnotherapy, antidepressant medication, Cognitive Behavioural therapy or a combination of various alternative and traditional approaches. Antipsychotic medication is sometimes used if the BDD is severe enough for there to be concerns for the person’s well-being.
