In denial, we minimize. “It wasn’t my father!” Those kinds of things. We are experts at making molehills out of mountains. No matter what happens, we’ll up the ante. We can find somebody else who had it worse than us, and somehow minimize it. We can rationalize: “Well, he was an alcoholic.” “She had it rough as a child.” “He, you know, had this problem.” “She did the best she could.” Well, if their best included child abuse, it was not good enough.
