Jenkins' Compliments to Dr Haydn - Haydn's strathspey
George Jenkins of High Holborn was a prominent dancing master, particularly of Scottish dancing, in the last two decades of the eighteenth century. These tunes appear to have been his attempt to exploit Haydn's singularly well-received second visit to London in 1794. The minuet form, and sudden key changes (particularly in flat keys) were particularly associated by the public with Haydn. In his latter years Haydn discovered a lucrative moneyspinner: the setting of Scots songs for British publishers; however, his talent as an executant of the Strathspey is unrecorded.
