We appreciate for the performance of headmaster of Ekisui-kan, Wakaura Yutetsu Jiro. He performed more than 60 techniques (waza) of “Shoden”, “Chuden”, and “Okuden”.
History of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu
Founder of Iai, “Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu” was born in 1542 in Hayashizaki, Oshu, where is Murayama-city, Yamagata prefecture today. His swordmanship has been come down to the 22th headmaster in today.
In 1558, Ashikaga Era, Hayashizaki’s swordmanship was named “Hayashizaki Musou Shindenn Shigenobu-ryu and widely spread around the nation.
“In 1644, Edo Era, the 7th headmaster, Hasegawa Chikanosuke Eishin made “Chuden” based on Hayashizaki’s “Okuden Tatehiza” and named it “Hasegawa Eishin Ryu”. Hayashizaki was also changed the name of “Hayashizaki Musou Shindenn Shigenobu Ryu” to ““Muso Zikiden Eishin-ryu”. The form of “Tatehiza” originally came from the manner of “Ise-ryu” or called “Ashikaga Shogun Ryu” , a practice and rules of samurai class. Hayashizaki’s father was a instructor of Ise-ryu
In 1716, middle of Edo era, “Musou Zikiden Eishin-ryu” was introduced to Tosa where is Kochi prefecture today.
The 9th headmaster, Hayashi Rokudaiu Morimas who was secretly introduced the Eishin-ryu From Edo/Tokyo to Tosa where is Kochi Prefecture today. He was a head of chef in Tosa-daimyo residence in Edo and an instructor of “Ise-ryu”.
“Shoden” techniques were added from the 9th headmaster.
His father, Hayashi Gozaemon Masayoshi became a student of Ise Hyogo Tadamasu and secretly studied the Ise-ryu. He took the manner of Ise-ryu into the Eishin-ryu and created “Shoden in Seiza (seated position). “Chiburi” in Shoden is one to show the manner of Ise-ryu.
“Shoden”, “Chuden”, “Okuden”, “Tsumeai” had never been allowed to be taken out from Tosa (Kochi-prefecture).
In Taisho Period, “Shoden” was introduced in the nationwide by 17th Headmaster, “Oe Masamichi.
Wakaura is student of 21th Headmaster, Hirai Ajizai. Wakaura found out the secret of “Seiden Iai” in orthdox lineage and “Bou-kei Iai” in collateral lineage. He also discovered “Shoden” was strongly influenced by “Ise-ryu”. He is currently head of “Ekisuikan Iaido and has de-coded hidden “Tsumei wasa” which was established by Iai founder, “Hayashizaki”.
