Description
Historical Perspective Lesson 4 for Afri-Amers Pt 1 - The Lion Awakens / Pt 2 - Our-Story Verses His-Story - Continuing the theme for the month 15 Lessons for Afri-Amers, today we take on the complex issue of Historical Perspective. We begin with the absolute value of WHY we must study history as well as from our own distinct cultural perspective. We address the role of myth, fable and allegory as origin stories. We ask who are our heroes and why? Art and theater include a broad base of guilds and crafts and all of these were used extensively as representation of our long and dense historical legacy. As well, rich oral traditions from west Africa carried more than history but also the depth of our conceptual framework of the Nature of things. "Until the Lion learns to write, the tale of the hunt will always be told by the hunter." This Kenyan proverb is loaded with power. As well, false histories and desperate myths, such as the so-called "Willie Lynch Letter" do not serve our true needs and these need to be discarded. Ultimately, our past is our present as well as our future. Our children deserve the true wealth of their own rich and distinct history. (LIBMP3-3332)
