Routines that Bring Out the Attributes of Connection
In our mentoring work, we have found that certain routines and practices are especially helpful for those seeking to connect with nature to activate their original design. We call these practices the Core Routines.
Core routines can be applied for enhancing connection with all the levels of the self, with family and community, and with all of nature.
A few examples of Core Routines include the sit spot, sharing the story of the day, journaling, mapping, holistic tracking, listening for bird language and applying the art of questioning. These are all important everyday activities that we can build into our lives no matter how busy we are, no matter where we live – whether it be downtown Manhattan or the deep wilderness – that will greatly enhance the quality of our experience in reconnection.
As Jon’s mentor Tom Brown, Jr. used to say, “It’s not about the quantity of you spend in nature, but the quality of the moments that you spend in nature that make a difference as to whether or not you fully activate that sacred core within yourself” – that original core designed to connect.
We’ll look at core routines from several perspectives, including how the 8 Shields Art of Mentoring Model employs core routines to drive deep nature connection experience across all the levels from within oneself, to the village and the larger community of nature.
