Its ancient name, which appeared in the Dead Sea scrolls, was Rekem. Identified as the capital of the Nabataeans, Aramaic-speaking Semites, and the center of their caravan trade.
Famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time", while the UNESCO described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage”. The Lost City of Stone is now one of the " New Seven Wonders of the World”.
The only modes of transport allowed inside Petra are camels, horses and donkeys, yet it’s an interesting and smooth ride down the road that leads you to magnificent wonders of Petra.
The Treasury or ( Al-Khaznah) about 40 meters high and 28 meters wide. Its façade elaborately carved with floral motifs and a cast of Nabataean and Greek deities and mythological figures. On August 22, 1812, Burckhardt entered Petra’s siq, thus becoming one of the first outsiders to reach Petra in several centuries.
