I have to say that in the genre IR romance - She, Mercedes Keyes is a breath of fresh air. Not only does she show genuine passion between the main characters she shows depth of feeling between the two main characters that I have yet to find in books by other authors. She made the era work with this story. I have to say, I wasn't sure it would work because of the slavery issue but she pulled it off. A truly superior read. I can't wait for her to get these books in print! I look forward to the rest of the series. |

I didn’t realize before I read Princess Cesalena that I would feel the need to write a review. But after spending half of my day and part of my night reading the book I feel a review has to be written.
I wasn’t shocked by the violence, language, or the hate that was found in the book, but the capture of the many different types of love. The love that can be found between child and parent, friend and friend, or a lovers love.
This is how the book captures it readers. It’s highly doubtful that we can relate to slavery, and I hope and pray that nobody has felt the hand of hatred whipped across their face and/or body. I know we can all relate to the love this book has to offer and because of that relation you’ll find yourself in tears. At times wishing you could have that child’s love; the innocent type of love that knows no boundaries. And other times you’ll find yourself laughing at the family atmosphere wishing you could join in on the fun.
It’s really hard on a person, well at least it was on me, when a book reaches out to you and brings you into the story. I remember exactly the last time I’ve cried this hard from reading a book. I was in 6th grade and it was Where the Red Fern Grows. I didn’t think I would ever reach the point again where I found myself crying into my pillow. Crying along with Lena as she cried out “Mikey!” Feeling like your own heart was breaking watching a mother become powerless. Even now as I sit here I get Goosebumps.
Other times I found myself running up and down my stairs to fight the anxiety that was building up. I do this often when it comes to movies while fast forwarding. Unlike television were you are shown a picture and a story; a book is words that your mind brings to life. Every once in awhile a story will come along that sucks you in so much that it becomes part of you. You begin to love the characters, as strange as it might sound, and you don’t want to see them hurt.
I needed to write this about the book. It’s a page-turner, a fling across the room, and an emotion finder all in one, type of book. The warnings that were posted were missing one thing. “Be Continued.” I know that I’ll be buying the other book when it comes out, because I can’t bear having the story end where it did.
So ladies if you want a good read that goes past interracial relationship and multicultural reads, I suggest you pick up and read Princess Cesalena. But be warned you’ll need a Kleenex box throughout the story.

I could not force myself to put this book down. I read it in a in a few hours, and this is a pretty large book. It completely grips you and you feel as though you are there. A part of the Webster family. The truly powerful moments are when the two lead characters beg, cry, and almost lose their sanity to keep their family together. I know this is strange, but I felt as if I could almost hear their anguished cries. The characters were all so well written and the fact that even the "evil minded" characters, had stories and you could not agree with what they did, but understand their pain as well. Like the character of Katherine, who I wanted to reach through the pages and strangle myself. But at times I couldn't help but to feel sorry for her. They say love plus jealousy makes you insanely crazy, and it certainly drove Katherine and Manny to the extreme.
I recommend this book to anyone. Romantics at heart, people who prefer period pieces, and those who just enjoy high quality fiction writing. It really doesn't get much better than "Princess Ces'alena". |
