HEIAN GODAN kata & application volume 6
Heian Godan, also known as Pinan Godan, is th eculmination of the Heian family of kata. In this video, about an hour long, John Burke sensei takes us through the joint-locks, throws, and strikes to anatomically vulnerable locations that this kata reveals.
If you've ever wondered what the jump was really for (surely not jumping over a bo staff..?), or why you would want to kick your own hand, then this video will show you how those moves can be used in self-defence situations.
The set forms of Karate are often seen as little more than tools towards rank advancement in commercial Karate schools. By using the techniques the way that they are shown in these videos, John Burke sensei returns the practice of kata to the central theme of the martial arts: how to protect yourself from harm. Rather than the usual demonstrations that show long range martial arts techniques used in a formal manner, these presentations reveal the "close-in" nature of self defence. These are big files, and they build into a set which could keep a Karate teacher going for a long time, just teaching a little bit of this information at a time. With pain levels like this you don't want to train like it all the time, but a little bit each week refreshes the art and keeps it relevant to today.
