SNAKE BITE LOVE is the fourteenth studio album by the British heavy metal band Motörhead. It was released on March 10, 1998 and features the three piece line up of Lemmy, Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell.
Being the band''s last 20th century studio release, SNAKE BITE LOVE is cut from the same cigarette-burned, whiskey-soaked cloth as such classic latter-day releases as ORGASMATRON and OVERNIGHT SENSATION. As expected, Lemmy and his cohorts offering no sudden shift in musical gears by trying something out of character. Motörhead had long perfected their garage metal sound and deliver another helping with SNAKE BITE LOVE. "Assassin" shows off drummer Mikkey Dee''s underrated abilities behind the kit. "Snake Bite Love" and "Don''t Lie to Me" put Lemmy''s rock and roll influences on full display. "Love for Sale" and "Dogs of War" prove to be metallic standouts, while "Joy of Labour" with it''s plenty of nasty slow riffs and a traditional fast track "Night Side" will certainly please ''old school'' fans. Although not quite in the same league as such early career monuments as OVERKILL or ACE OF SPADES, SNAKE BITE LOVE shows that Motorhead still has plenty of gas left in its tank.
Lemmy recalls that the making of SNAKE BITE LOVE was quite normal for the band:
"Six weeks before we recorded it, we didn''t even have one song. But when it came time, we put it together very quickly. Unfortunately, I was sick for some of the rehearsals, and when you leave two guys together who aren''t singers, you end up with some weird arrangements."
He points particularly to "Desperate for You" and "Night Side" in this respect and explains how the title track started as a completely different song Dee recorded the drums tracks against a totally different set of chords, then it went back to Sweden where Campbell stated he was sick of the song and didn''t like it, Lemmy agreed and Campbell came up with a new riff and changed the whole thing. Lemmy admits that the album is a prime example of him writing the words at the last minute, and adds "you know, lazy son of a bitch one more time, right?". Campbell is jokingly credited in the album''s liner notes as an unpronouncable glyph ("The Artist Frequently Seen at the Liquor Store"), mocking Prince.
