Neuroanthropology© the study of archetypal postures,
movements, behavior and social constructs in Sports and related activity that
connect us to our evolution, infancy, neurodegeneration and primordial selves.
Neuroanthropology© is a new hypothesis involving Neurology,
Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology and Psychiatry among other fields linked to
our evolution. It is contended that Sports gestures, postures, movements and
expressions are critical to what represents the primitive consciousness if not
unconsciousness of the Sports performer. We are aware of the athlete''''''''''''''''s
individual motives and the larger structure of games and leagues but have
missed the totemism if not Malinowskis Total Outline of the neurological,
psychosocial and evolutionary aspects of the numerous unconscious actions of
those participating in athletics and related activities.
in adopting the exaggerated movements of certain genetic and neurodegenerative
diseases, the Lesch-Nyhan like self-injurious actions of the recklessly diving
basketball star, the freezing in Parkinson disease to steady the pro golfer before a winning putt or the
involuntary dance like movement of Huntington disease simulated by the jittery
running back eluding a tackler, we are doing a replay of many of these gestures,
postures, habits and behavioral actions mediated through cortico-striatal
circuits; we carry them out unconsciously , reflecting their evolutionary,
ontological and involutional origins.
The genetic and
neurodegenerative processes at play in such diseases implicated in sports
movement involve the most
phylogenetically ancient components of the brain, including the pre-frontal
cortex, the brain stem, cerebellum, substantia nigra and striatum.
Throughout the Sports world and in other pursuits, recurrent
examples of movements, gestures, postures and behaviors support the contention
that our neuro-ontogeny and neuro-philogeny are being re-enacted. Jungian
archetypal issues are implicated in the generation of play/game/Sports psychic
content. There is also the interpretation that player/team/league/fan paradigms
are reflected in constructs related to psychosis, neurosis, striatal
neurochemical reward systems and societal rituals and foundations.
Sports, which includes athletic movement, play, games,
team/league organization and fandom, reveals our Primal Neuroanthropology.
Relevance to our evolution, development from infancy, psychic existence,
movement/behavioral patterns, cultural institutions, basal ganglia mediated
disorders and neuro-decay is derived from this analysis of Sports.
