Megadeth

Album Description:

Two months after lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica due to drinking, drug use, violent behavior and personality conflicts with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Mustaine and bassist Dave Ellefson formed Megadeth in Los Angeles.

KILLING IS MY BUSINESS... AND BUSINESS IS GOOD! is the debut album by the American heavy metal band released in June 1985 through Combat and Relativity Records. During the beginning of 1985, the band was given $8,000 by Combat Records to record and produce their debut album. Instead, a majority of the budget was spent on drugs, alcohol, and food, meaning the band was forced to fire their original producer and produce the album themselves at the Indigo Ranch Studios, in Malibu, California. Despite the resulting poor production, KILLING IS MY BUSINESS... AND BUSINESS IS GOOD!, released in May 1985, was a well-received effort that blended elements of thrash and speed metal. The album includes a controversial cover of Nancy Sinatra's classic hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", redone as a blinding speed metal ditty, as well as the long-time fan-favorite "Mechanix". "Mechanix" had previously surfaced as "The Four Horsemen," with different lyrics on Metallica's debut KILL 'EM ALL. This deluxe edition is completely remixed and digitally remastered by Dave Mustane and producer/mixer Bill Kennedy with 4 original 1984 demo's added as bonus tracks. The album features vastly different artwork, with its cover based on the version originally designed by Dave Mustaine in 1985. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS... AND BUSINESS IS GOOD! documents Mustaine's debuting his lead-vocal skills, while also serving as the band's primary lyricist, main songwriter, and co-lead and rhythm guitarist.

Mustaine must have had a lot of pent-up anger to express, since KILLING is simply explosive from beginning to end. The brutal title track lyrically deals with a sniper who revels in hunting down his unsuspecting prey. Other highlights include the album opening "Last Rites/Loved to Death" and the pro-heavy metal "Rattlehead."

Mustaine later said, "After getting fired from Metallica, all I remember is that I wanted blood. Theirs. I wanted to be faster and heavier than them". Fueled by the desire for revenge, Mustaine elevated the intensity of Megadeth's music, speeding up existing songs such as "Mechanix," which Metallica's new line-up adapted into the slower paced "The Four Horsemen." Also, the song "Last Rites/Loved to Death" reinterprets the introduction of Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach, speeding up the tempo.

Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios, Malibu, California and Crystal Sound Labs, Hollywood, California U.S.A. in December 1984 & January 1985.

Megadeth: Chris Poland, Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar, piano); David Ellefson (bass guitar, background vocals); Gar Samuelson (drums, timpani).
