Angela Gheorghiu

Album Description:

VERDI HEROINES is a year 2000 release for DECCA RECORDS by Romanian soprano, Angela Gheorghiu. Since her professional debut in 1990, she has sung as soprano leading roles at New York''s Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden''s Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, Milan''s La Scala, and many other opera houses in Europe and the United States. She has a substantial discography primarily with EMI Classics and Decca.

Angela Gheorghiu catapulted to stardom in a 1994 Covent Garden production of "La Traviata." On VERDI HEROINES, the young Romanian reaffirms her place as one of the leading Verdi sopranos with this thrilling and multifaceted recital. In arias from nine operas, Gheorghiu vividly creates a gamut of female characters, ranging from the girlish innocence of Gilda in "Rigoletto" to the dramatic intensity of the title role of "Aida." Investing each of Verdi''s heroines with a distinctive personality and an appropriate vocal palette, Gheorghiu shows remarkable versatility and exemplary control of dynamics. The ebullient Bolero from "I Vespri Siciliani" that opens the program is sung with captivating vigor, but this glittering showpiece only hints at the emotional roller-coaster ride that follows. Powerful arias such as "Tu che la vanità" from "Don Carlo" and "Pace, pace, mio Dio!" from "La Forza del Destino" blaze with drama, while the lyrical "Come in quest''ora bruna" from "Simon Boccanegra" is an ideal showcase for Gheorghiu''s beautiful tone. But the doleful circumstances of Desdemona in "Otello" inspire her finest singing, with a deeply touching "Willow Song" and "Ave Maria" to close the program. Riccardo Chailly generates much excitement on the podium and elicits eloquent solo playing from members of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, providing a rich backdrop for the star soprano.
