Steve Vai

Album Description:

ALIEN LOVE SECRETS is an EP made by Steve Vai in 1995. ALIEN LOVE SECRETS, which was once the name of Steve Vai's music/philosophy/advice column in a popular guitar magazine, was written as a stripped-down guitar, bass and drums record with minimal keyboards.

Rock guitar fans will not be disappointed with the seven mostly instrumental escapades - many are altogether hummable, each bearing Vai's unmistakable personality and living up to his reputation for fantastic expression. The set is varied enough that each piece is drastically different, complete unto itself and yet completely Vai. The myriad of various voices and emotions he can conjure from six or seven strings, and a few signal processors, is impressive.

ALIEN LOVE SECRETS was released in the middle of the recording process of the 1996 album FIRE GARDEN, as Vai wished to keep a steady output, and the 70 plus minutes of FIRE GARDEN were taking too long to release at an acceptable interval after SEX & RELIGION. Notable tracks include "Bad Horsie" (derived from a riff Vai played in the movie CROSSROADS as the Devil's guitar prodigy). The song mixes strange sounds, tasteful fretboard acrobatics and a frightful lowness emanating from Vai's bottom 7th string. "Ya-Yo Gakk" is one of the cooler songs on ALIEN LOVE SECRETS, which features musical gibberish eloquently expressed by Steve's young child, Julian. The effect is a successful mix of the goofy with the sublime. "Tender Surrender", one of Vai's most famous songs, bases itself around a familiar sound, structure and beats-per-minute as Jimi Hendrix's "Villanova Junction" from LIVE AT WOODSTOCK, although written in a different key. Interestingly, "The Boy from Seattle" is actually a tribute to Jimi Hendrix written by Vai.

"Tender Surrender" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Personnel: Steve Vai (guitar, bass, programming); Julian Vai (vocals); Tommy Mars (organ); Deen Castronovo (drums).

All Songs Written, Produced, Arranged & Engineered by Steve.
