Surge is a great big band which of his various bands is the most exciting vehicle for composer Sid Peacocks music. It has been around in smaller and larger forms for a number of years and indeed played its debut gig at the CBSO Centre about four years ago. But a short artist residency in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris gave Sid the opportunity to really work on the music. Then a gig at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May 2010 saw the first performance of the new pieces and the launch of a great new and bigger version of the band with 16 players conducted by Sid.
That gig was greeted extremely enthusiastically by Phil Johnson of The Independent who said in his review of the 2010 Festival:
the best new stuff Ive heard in an age came from the Birmingham-based Irish composer Sid Peacock, whose young, 16-piece big band played inspiring, wildly creative music Phil Johnson, Indpendent
Surge is now a 16 piece Big Band made up of musicians from folk, world, jazz and classical backgrounds. Our music is exciting, uplifting, kaleidoscopic, disorientating, warm, funny, crazy nall..
