Album Description:

HAUNTING THE CHAPEL is an EP released by the American thrash metal band Slayer in 1984 through Metal Blade and Enigma Records. Slayer''s very promising debut album SHOW NO MERCY became Metal Blade''s highest selling, leading to producer Brian Slagel wanting to release an EP. Recorded in Hollywood the recording process proved difficult when recording drums in a studio without carpet, although it resulted in drummer Dave Lombardo meeting Gene Hoglan who was to become an influence in his drumming style and speed. However Hoglan said he gave him a bunch of tips and never really gave him lessons, he was influenced by Slayer too.

Originally featuring three songs and issued in between the band''s debut and the following year''s more sonically ripened HELL AWAITS, HAUNTING THE CHAPEL offers important clues about this transition period and evidences a marked evolution from the style of SHOW NO MERCY. Here, Slayer''s rock-based song structures give way to the non-linear, genre-defining style thereafter regarded as thrash metal''s signature sound and is considered the first demonstration of the band''s "classic" style displayed on later albums and is often described as a "stepping stone."

Among the uniformly solid cuts here, the enduring fan favorite "Captor of Sin" is another highlight, making this a well-recommended release for committed Slayer fans. "Captor of Sin" and "Chemical Warfare" are regularly featured on the band''s live set list. "Chemical Warfare" appears in the game GUITAR HERO: WARRIORS OF ROCK.

Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman (guitar); Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums).

Recorded at Track Records, Los Angeles, California.

Digitally remastered by Eddie Schreyer (November 1993, Future Disc).

Produced by Slayer.
