Swamps, countless canals and natural watercourses are typical of the rugged landscape of Cuba’s Ciénaga de Zapata Peninsula. The Montemar Nature Park, that is located in the southern part of the Cuban province of Matanzas, is regarded to be one of the largest wetlands in the entire Caribbean.
Prior to the Cuban Revolution, the area was owned by 10 powerful entrepreneurs. At that time, woodcutters, charcoal-burners and crocodile hunters worked within its mangrove forests.
Of the park’s 180 varieties of bird, 23 are endemic and due to their large numbers, they are relatively easy to observe.
The landscape of the Salinas is totally different from the Matanzas. In this savannah-like environment, the vegetation is quite scant, the earth arid and cracked.
Approximately 342 varieties of bird have been recorded in Cuba and the majority inhabit the Zapata Peninsula.
With its abundance of natural splendor, the Ciénaga de Zapata, in the heart of Cuba, is like a beautiful work of art created by nature.
