Travel to Chicago with Dave where Mayor Daley invited us to view his groundbreaking green roof, high atop City Hall, in downtown Chicago. While the living roof is not open to the public, it serves as an example to reduce energy consumption by insulating the building from cold and heat, reducing rainwater runoff, encouraging pollinators and birds within the urban landscape, all while beautifying the view from surrounding buildings.

Next, it’s off to Millennium Park. For over a century the lakeshore of Chicago was blighted by an unsightly rail yard, parking lots, and traffic. Embarking on a plan first conceived in the late 19th century, urban planners began an ambitious project to build an exciting public venue and dynamic urban space to disguise a massive underground parking structure and rail lines with a living roof and sculpture.

The result is Millennium Park. From the Lurie Garden carpeted with thousands of prairie native flowers to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion by Frank Gehry with its undulating steel wings, the park is now Chicago''s top attraction.

In this episode of Garden Travels, Dave''s favorites include: Echinacea, Diascia and Mallards.
