Making connections and attachments back to unpleasant or unwanted memories can be depressing and distressing, because it can hinder us from moving forward from that situation, and it can destroy the pleasure and satisfaction of something new that is happening in present day life.
Often thoughts about past incidents or people, can influence our perception of what we are experiencing in the present, so we judge someone of something, by what has gone before, and this can be very frustrating for others, as they cannot understand why we are reacting as we are, or saying the things we say. This can lead to all manner of misunderstandings, conflicts and confrontation.
Thinking about the past, can be beneficial. It can be comforting, supportive and rewarding, it can prepare us to better manage present day situations, and it helps us to learn from our mistakes. But the emotional distress of reliving past experiences that were negative, whether it be a relationship, a traumatic event, or something that you hadn t expected to cause distress, can be physically draining and this can impact on your long-term health. So, If the past creeps up on you, taking you unawares and causes distress, or the past dominates your thoughts when you don t want it to, something needs to change. You can't change the past but you can change your feelings about it. When you feel more relaxed about things that happened in the past, and you can accept them for what they were by changing how your subconscious mind deals with them, and you can let them go, you will have the freedom to enjoy the present and the future.
