McCourt - Chapter 02
Cosmologies, Concepts and Theories
Time and Childbirth in Cross-cultural Perspective
chapter discusses the ways in which anthropologists have looked at
childbirth, and at time, but also focuses on the theoretical
perspectives within anthropology which can contribute to a broader
understanding of beliefs and practices relating to childbirth. It looks
first at anthropological studies of time, and then the anthropology of
childbirth, and ways in which these connect in several ethnographies.
It is intended to provide an introduction to thinking anthropologically
about childbirth, and so to ask new questions, by making what may be
familiar, to some readers at least, strange.
