Divided We Stand
divisions in the SDS were on the increase throughout the period and
they gradually became important for the position of the RS leaders.
Even more significant, however, were the increasingly strenuous
relations between civilian and military leaders; the RS leaders were
heavily dependent on the military, both to pursue their war aims and to
hold on to power. As a further challenge to the power of the previously
near-monolithic leaders, opposition parties also began to emerge.
