How do Chamakkala fishermen conceive the

this chapter I present my ethnographic material in terms of local
concepts and supplement it by commentaries and additional observations.
I am interested in consensus and dissent, as well as in the men's

'The Sea is a Woman, the Mountains are a Man'
fishermen commonly refer to the sea as female and as mother. This is
what Krishnankutti Kochikkattu did in the conversation at the beginning
of Chapter 1.
