Buy and Download Description I have borrowed this chapter's title from an essay by James Wilson (1990), because it illustrates the thesis I want to develop on the following pages: that fishing in Chamakkala is an endeavour of active knowledge-making. Wilson challenges an assumption that used to be common in theoretical studies of the economy of fishing: that fish are randomly or uniformly distributed in the sea. If this were the case, Wilson notes, the catch rate would depend on the fishing effort and the size of the fish stock only (ibid.: 12). No fisherman in Chamakkala would make this assumption. Most of the economically interesting fish occur in shoals (pelappu or kuttam), whose movement follows some seasonal patterns, but these are impossible to predict with such precision as would aid fisheries.
