"The women of the royal harem know each other's secrets, and having but one object to attain, they give assistance to each other. A young man, who enjoys all of them, and who is common to them all, can continue enjoying his union with them so long as it is kept quiet, and is not known abroad." from the Kama Sutra
Dated loosely from the 4th century of the Common Era, the Kama Sutra by Vatsyayana presents a frank, unjudging, and completely fascinating discussion of sex as it was regarded during that period of Hindu civilization. When it comes to sex, some things never change and you will likely nod your head with understanding while reading the Kama Sutra.
However, because of its ancient origin, the Kama Sutra can be startling and strange, outrageous even. For example, in a chapter discussing methods for obtaining a wife, one way is for a man to abduct the girl he desires, intoxicate her, and then "enjoy her" and thereby make her his wife. Abduction rape is hardly condoned today, but was perhaps something a man could get away with in an earlier time. To his credit, Vatsyayana does not consider this a very suitable way to get a wife and puts it at the bottom of the list. It is to be used only when no other method will work.
The Kama Sutra has long been marketed as a guide to sex and sexual positions. The work serves that function and the descriptions provide stimulating fun for readers' imaginations, but the Kama Sutra is a great deal more than a sex guide. It contains a fascinating look at an ancient culture from a perspective of intimacy. Sex is a part of all societies, and the Kama Sutra, while discussing sex and love, reveals far more of its world than just the physical acts of pleasure. A complex society full of festivals, parties, art, poetry, food, sports, and music sets the scenes for lovers to rendezvous and allows you to see an ancient civilization complete with its passion and beauty.
Some of the most erotic portions of the work come in the chapters that explain what goes on in a king's harem. (Haven't you always wanted to know?) Plus there are detailed descriptions of the lives of courtesans with all kinds of advice for maximizing the profit from one's sex acts. In raunchy detail, the ancient author also discusses how to seduce the wives of other men, when it is appropriate, and how best to benefit from it. In a culture in which women were supposedly chaste before marriage, men tended to seek sexual satisfaction with married women who were ready and willing for sex. And if they were upset with their husbands, it could certainly be a young and curious Hindu male's lucky day.
