As ethnographers for Microsoft we conduct studies with many populations in an attempt to more deeply understand people's relationship, or lack thereof, with technology. Our primary goal is to make people's lives and behaviours come to life for our colleagues so these become the cornerstone of product development, with a secondary goal of challenging our colleagues' assumptions while encouraging reflexive critique. In 2003 we launched an international program where we did exploratory field studies designed to bring awareness and actionable knowledge of people in various global markets to the Windows client division as a way of complementing and enriching the statistical measures that had long been used.
