Grasseni - Chapter 02
Blessed Be the Car!
chapter takes stock of the arguments for the multi-locality and
multi-vocality of place (see Chapter 1.3), in order to pursue an
ethnographic analysis of the many links between identity and locality.
Granted that ‘the problem of place' is not only one of deconstructing
anthropological locations but also one of acknowledging the role of
physical environment, historical development and lived experience in
constructing identity, I take into account personal narratives,
historical and cartographic evidence and participant observation in
religious practices to highlight the debating and negotiation of
‘modernity' in an Alpine village. I shall elaborate on how the issue of
development, connectedness and road-planning in the mountain
‘enclosure' of Valtaleggio is not univocally perceived and addressed.
