Memories in Motion

Against a backdrop of historical and geographical mobility of Irish dance, this chapter combines theoretical perspectives on mobility on the one hand and social or popular memory on the other with the idea of the body as a site of culture. This analytical triad brings out the idea of embodiment of Irishness through dance, and how dance itself is also a case in point for mobility. This is where Ballads, the dance theatre production which features the Famine as a topic, is an instance of how history from the more distant past is managed in popular memory. The dance theatre production Macalla (Irish for echo) featuring the Troubles in Northern Ireland is an illustration of such memory of recent, lived history which Irish people who were included in my study, had experienced themselves.
