The "Memorandum of the Generals" for the Nuremberg Court

One might expect that a memorandum from Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch, the last Supreme Commander of the Army before Hitler himself took over the post, dated 19 November 1945 and drafted jointly with several generals in order to "give testimony on behalf of the entire German army" to the International Court in Nuremberg, would represent an important document for contemporary history. According to their own statement, these men did not feel themselves obligated to oppose Hitler. Their credo was allegedly to "stay completely away from politics"an assertion that provokes a question mark in Halder's case since he belonged to the military opposition along with Oster, Canaris, Beck, and others up until the fall of 1939. From a practical point of view, the memorandum is a statement for the defense.
