How Amorality Become Normality

Reflections on the Mentality of German Soldiers on the Eastern Front

Backed by overwhelming evidence, historical research has proved that the Wehrmacht participated in and shared responsibility for the Nazi genocide. It has not yet been able to answer the question of how millions of "completely normal German men" could become perpetrators, helpers, and witnesses. I therefore propose an approach which is oriented toward three categories: 1. Disposition — taken as the entirety of the formative influences and interpretational patterns previously internalized by the soldiers; 2. Situation — viewed as the sum of the various determinants resulting from military phase, operational area, issued orders and function; 3. Legitimation — defined as the interpretation of events based on personal experience (and in most cases backed up by propaganda) which, contrary to all logic, persistently made the war appear just and necessary.
