the loss of an entire army as a heroic example for the nation was
consistent with the logic of an ideology that was always prepared to
exploit the sacrifice of the individual for the Volksgemeinschaft to
rhetorical ends. The commander in chief of the 6th Army, Generaloberst
Friedrich Paulus, set the tone on 29 January 1943 in his congratulatory
radio message to Hitler on the tenth anniversary of the Nazis'
assumption of power: "May our struggle serve as an example for this and
future generations that one must never capitulate even in the most
hopeless predicament. Then Germany will triumph."
