Buckler - Chapter 02
Nevertheless, this is my book: I have written it, I have chosen what to write about and I have chosen to represent people in one way rather than another way. As such, I run the risk of manipulating the voices and integrity of those I write about in order to serve my own purpose; I run the risk of co-opting and misrepresenting people's voices and constructing a picture of them they would neither recognise nor feel comfortable with if they did recognise it. This will always be a risk in carrying out what is essentially a solitary exercise such as writing a book. I have, however, tried to remain aware of and sensitive to this possibility and have requested that some of those that are written about read the book and agree that they are happy with it. This has not, however, been possible with everyone, mostly because some of those with whom I have worked have difficulty reading and writing and would certainly feel uncomfortable with the kind of writing that is necessary to produce an academic text.
