The present chapter focuses first on the individuals who died or were injured in myriad accidents plaguing the coalfield. The accident reports offer a look at individual workers that is unprecedented in Ottoman labor history. In them, we learn not only the workers' names but also their occupations and origins, ages, marital status, and sometimes even the sex and ages of their children. Next, the chapter discusses the medical care available to the work force. The quality and number of medical personnel and hospitals surely improved over the decades but left much to be desired. Moreover, since it was the workers who paid for the care received, many compulsory workers instead returned to their villages and others simply endured their injuries alone. Next, the chapter examines the safety programs of the Ottoman state and the agendas it pursued in striving to make the mines safer, healthier work spaces. These programs were part and parcel of nineteenth-century reform programs with dual aims: (1) to discipline Ottoman society and make it more amenable to administrative control, and (2) to create a healthier, more informed, aware citizenry to better serve the state. The chapter concludes by assessing the workers' frequent refusal to accept these mine safety programs.
