In the present chapter, I describe the varieties of labor in the Zonguldak coal- field. Giving particular attention to the dangerous underground work within the mines, I discuss as well the supporting tasks that were necessary to bring coal to market. Often reading between the lines of documents, I offer glimpses into the daily lives of labor more than 100 years ago. At the end of the nineteenth century, and likely throughout the coalmining era, the aboveground labor force worked in better conditions than their underground colleagues. Much of this, of course, was due simply to location. After all, no matter how strenuous or difficult the job aboveground, it favorably compared to working in the dark, explosive, cramped, health-threatening, and dangerous conditions of underground work, especially those at the coal face. But better working conditions also owed much to the fact that aboveground workers, with important exceptions such as the transporters and support makers, were free labor.
